After 3 days playing with Ubuntu Netbook Remix on Acer Aspire One, I’ve found the 1024×600 display is too limited. The human-netbook-theme is not fully optimized for such small screen. So i modify it a little to make it looks better.
Things I’ve added
- Reduce spaces between menu items
- Use small icon in dialogs
- Use Tangerine icon set instead of Human set. It gives better contrast

Windows XP, works well but no driver for iSight camera and have to run input remapper to get fn button works.
Ubuntu Linux 6.06, booted from LiveCD. The monitor’s resolution is 1280×800 but detected as 1024×768. No sound, no wifi (both are detected but not working).

IMHO, Windows will be a lot better (and safer) OS if it doesn’t come with IE, but Firefox instead.
เพิ่งดู DVD หนังญี่ปุ่นเรื่อง IZO จบไปตะกี๊
ตอนดูก็รู้สึกแปลกๆ ว่าทำไมหนังมันกระตุกๆ DVD เรื่องก่อนนี้ที่เอามาดูมันก็กระตุกนิดๆ เหมือนกัน
เช็คดู libdvdcss2 ก็ลงไว้แล้ว เปลี่ยน video output เป็น xv, x11 แล้วก็ยังไม่หาย
สุดท้ายมาพบว่า DVD drive ไม่ได้เปิด DMA ไว้ เป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้มันกระตุกนี่เอง
จัดการเปิดใช้งาน DMA ง่ายๆ ด้วยคำสั่ง
$ sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc
แล้วก็ไปแก้ไฟล์ /etc/hdparm.conf เพิ่มบรรทัดนี้เข้าไป
/dev/hdc {
dma = on
}
เพื่อให้มันเปิดใช้งาน DMA ทุกครั้งที่เปิดเครื่อง
เท่านี้ก็เนียนแล้ว โง่อยู่ตั้งนาน
พยายามวาดกราฟใส่ใน thesis proposal ด้วย the GIMP รู้สึกตัวว่ากำลังทำผิดอยู่ เพราะว่า GIMP มันเป็นโปรแกรมจัดการภาพแบบ Raster เอามาวาดเส้นตรงๆ โค้งๆ ไม่เหมาะเลย
นึกถึง Adobe Illustrator ขึ้นมาตะหงิดๆ
เคยได้ยินมาว่า ใน linux ก็มีโปรแกรมประเภท vector drawing อย่าง Inkscape ไว้ใช้แทนกันได้
ว่าแล้วก็ apt-get install inkscape เสียเลย
หลังจากลองใช้ดู feature อาจจะไม่มากมายขนาด illustrator การใช้งานแรกๆ ยังไม่ค่อยคุ้นมือ งงกับเครื่องมือต่างๆ พอสมควร แต่ลองเล่นดูซักชั่วโมงนึงก็พอจะเข้าใจมากขึ้น
วาดกราฟ ใส่ตัวหนังสือ ได้ตามต้องการ เวลา save ใช้ฟอร์แมตเป็น SVG เสียด้วย เจ๋งดี
เสร็จเรียบร้อย export ออกมาเป็น PNG แปะใส่ OpenOffice.org Writer ได้เนียนๆ
ทำไมเราถึงเรียก USB Flash drive กันว่า Thumb drive ?
กรณีนี้น่าจะคล้ายๆ กับว่า ทำไมเราเรียก ผงซักฟอก กันว่า แฟ้บ
เพราะยี่ห้อแรกๆ ของ USB flash drive ถ้าจำไม่ผิดน่าจะเป็นของ iomega ทำออกมาในชื่อทางการค้าว่า Thumb drive นี่แหละ
ฟังดูก็รู้ว่ามันไม่ค่อยถูก แต่ก็ไม่ได้ซีเรียสอะไรมาก
แต่ชื่อที่ฟังแล้วหงุดหงิดก็คือ Floppy drive, Disk drive เนี่ย ทำไมเค้าชอบเรียกกันจังว่า “ไดรฟ์ เอ”
เพราะว่า Floppy drive ของคนส่วนใหญ่ถูก mount ไว้ที่ A:/ หละมั้ง
คิดไปถึงสมัยอยู่ ม.ต้น เครื่องคอมที่โรงเรียนจะมี floppy drive ขนาด 3.5″ เหมือนกัน แต่มันตั้งไว้เป็น “ไดรฟ์ บี” นะ
ส่วน “ไดรฟ์ ซี” เนี่ย ส่วนใหญ่ก็หมายถึง harddisk อันนี้ได้ยินมานานแล้ว
พอมาตอนนี้ได้ยินแบบนี้แล้วมันออกจะหงุดหงิดอยู่เล็กน้อย เพราะ harddisk ผมมันไม่ได้มี label แปะไว้ว่า C:/ อีกต่อไปแล้ว แต่มันมีชื่อเท่ๆ กว่าว่า /dev/hda ต่างหาก ส่วน disk drive ก็มีชื่อว่า /dev/fd0
Filesystem ที่มันมี root ที่เดียว เท่กว่าพวกแบ่งเป็น A, B, C ตั้งเยอะ
mplayer เป็น media player สารพัดประโยชน์ เล่นไฟล์ audio ก็ได้ video ก็ได้ หรือจะใช้ encode ไฟล์ multimedia format ต่างๆ ก็ได้เหมือนกัน
ปกติเวลาใช้ mplayer ดู video มันจะมี option -vo เอาไว้กำหนด video output
ถ้าใช้ -vo xv จะดูแบบเต็มจอ และ resize ได้ แต่จะใช้โปรแกรม capture หน้าจอของ gnome ไม่ได้
ต้องใช้ -vo x11 จะสามารถ capture ได้ถูกต้อง แต่ว่าจะ resize หรือดูแบบ fullscreen ไม่ได้
ได้อย่าง ก็ต้องเสียอย่าง …
